Students should regularly consult the Music Education Professional Development Policy for guidelines, requirements, and all categories of professional development.

Complete the following Hearing Health item:
- Read Basic Information On Hearing Health and submit a 2-page reflection (10 points).
- NOTE: Students may also complete a baseline hearing evaluation through the Ball State Audiology Clinic and submit evidence that they have completed this evaluation to earn 15 points. It is no longer clear if this service continues to be free to all BSU students.
- You must submit proof of attendance (receipt or signed log) and a reflection statement. (25 points) Example: NAfME Academy and NAfME's Virtual Learning Resources for Music Educators.

SPRING 2024
- M: April 22, 2024 = Stephanie Haglund, Director of Student Success for the College of Fine Arts, will offer a professional development session entitled "Avoiding Burnout." This PD event will begin at 6:00pm in MU 401 and is being sponsored NAFME @ Ball State. (25 points NAFME members; 20 points non-members)
- W: April 17, 2024 = Malina Simone Bacon, Co-Founder and Creative Director of GANGGANG, will present a professional talk titled "The World, According to Mali." This talk is being sponsored by the College of Fine Arts and will take place in Pruis Hall at 1:00pm. (15 PD points for all MUSE students with verified attendance)
- W: April 17, 2024 = Professional development and choral reading session focused on choral music from various world cultures. The election of ACDA @ Ball State officers for the 2024-2025 academic year will occur at the end of the session. This PD event, hosted by Dr. Mandy Moreno, will begin at 6:00pm in the Band Room, MI 152, and is being sponsored by ACDA @ Ball State. (25 points ACDA members; 20 points non-members)
- R: April 11, 2024 = Dr. William Sauerland, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at Purdue University - Fort Wayne, will present "Trauma Informed Pedagogy." This PD event will begin at 6:00pm in MU 401 and is being sponsored by NAFME @ Ball State. (25 points NAFME members; 20 points non-members)
- W: March 20, 2024 through Sa: March 23, 2024 = The American String Teachers Association (ASTA) Annual Conference. The Kentucky International Conference Center, Louisville, KY. Highly encouraged for all String MUSE Majors. 25 PD points for each session attended. Students attending the conference as part of ASTA @ BALL STATE's organized trip can receive up to 100 PD points.
- W: March 13, 2024 = Heather Nieto, President of Indiana-ASTA, will host a "Q & A Roundtable Discussion." This PD event will begin at 6:00pm in MU 401 and is being sponsored by ASTA @ Ball State. (25 points ASTA members; 20 points non-members)
- T: March 12, 2024 = Dr. Yoko Shimazaki-Kilburn, Dr. Matt Spieker, and doctoral student Oksana Komarenko will present "Music Education around the World." This PD event will begin at 6:00pm in MU 401 and is being sponsored by NAFME @ Ball State. (25 points NAFME members; 20 points non-members)
- W: February 28, 2024 = Dr. Philip McAdoo - "Topics in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Creating an Inclusive Culture of Belonging." This event is sponsored by the College of Fine Arts and will be held in Sursa Hall from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. Please visit https://philipmcadoo.com/ to learn more about Dr. McAdoo and some of the potential topics he may explore in this session. 25 PD Points for all participants.
- W: February 28, 2024 = Anne Tschetter, consultant for Quinlan & Fabish and Orchestra Director at Penn High School - Professional development session entitled "How do I...?" This PD event will begin at 6:00pm in MU 401 and is being sponsored ASTA @ Ball State. (25 points ASTA members; 20 points non-members)
- R: February 22, 2024 = Eric Thornbury and Jacob Crossley, band directors at Noblesville HS, and joined by a Brass Quintet - Professional development session entitled "The Power of Chamber Music for your Program." This PD event will begin at 5:00pm in Hahn Hall and is being sponsored NAFME @ Ball State. (25 points NAFME members; 20 points non-members)
- T: February 20, 2024 = Professional development and choral reading session focused on choral music for Black History Month. This PD event, hosted by Dr. Mandy Moreno, will begin at 5:00pm in Hahn Hall, MI 163, and is being sponsored by ACDA @ Ball State. (25 points ACDA members; 20 points non-members)
- R: February 15, 2024 = Quinlan & Fabish Student Teacher Day. The Quinlan & Fabish Muncie Location, 600 Mulberry Street, from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Highly encouraged for MUSE student teachers and practicum students (MUSE 350). Various sessions and events offered in instrumental music education. 25 PD points for each session attended. Students attending the full day can receive up to 100 PD points. Participation will be verified by Quinlan and Fabish personnel.
- W: February 7, 2024 through Sa: February 10, 2024 = The American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Regional Conference. The CHI Health Conference Center, Omaha, NE. Highly encouraged for all Choral MUSE Majors. 25 PD points for each session attended. Students attending the conference as part of ACDA @ BALL STATE's organized trip can receive up to 100 PD points.
- T: January 30, 2024 = Dr. Mandy Moreno - "Post-COVID Performance: Using Body Mapping to Manage Performance Anxiety." This event is sponsored by the College of Fine Arts and will be held in the David Owsley Museum of Art, AR 217. Registration is required. More information and registration is available at: https://commcenter.bsu.edu/message/post-covid-performance-using-body-mapping-to-manage-performance-anxiety. 25 PD Points for all participants.
- Sa: January 27, 2024 = Hallway and room monitors, group escorts, event support, etc. for the Mid-America Show Choir Championship, hosted by the Ball State University Singers and held in Emens Auditorium and various locations within the School of Music. To earn PD points, students must complete a 1-2 page reflection and have their PD Log signed by Devin Van Lue, Assistant Company Manager for University Singers. Reflections should address the role and responsibilities of directors in contest and/or festival settings, the potential benefits of contest and festival participation on students' developing musicianship, or other ways in which the volunteer's participation may benefit their preparation for a career in music teaching. A maximum of 25 PD points can be earned with a minimum of 1 hour of service.
- W: January 24, 2024 = Dr. Ann Hicks - "Call out Meeting" for anyone interested in learning about handbells, with the potential to start a handbell choir here at BSU. This event is being hosted by NAFME @ Ball State and will take place at 5:00pm in MU 401. Dr. Hicks will provide a little background on handbells and teach some basic ringing techniques before participants explore some music together. (10 PD points for all participants).
- R: January 11, 2024 through Sa: January 13, 2024 = The Indiana Music Education Association (IMEA) Annual Professional Development Conference. The Grand Wayne Convention Center, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Highly encouraged for all MUSE Majors. Various sessions and events offered in all areas of music education. 25 PD points for each session attended. Students attending the conference as part of NAFME @ BALL STATE's organized trip can receive up to 100 PD points. A copy of the IMEA issued certificate of participation and PGP points can be used to verify participation.
- HOLIDAY BREAK
- W: December 20, 2023 through Sa: December 23, 2023 = The Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference. McCormick Place West, Chicago, Illinois. Various sessions and events offered for instrumental and general music education majors. 25 PD points for each session attended and verified with a presenter signature. Students may also submit their Midwest Clinic issued attendance report to verify participation.
- FALL 2023
- M: September 11, 2023 = Teaching Majors, Get Your Teach On! Activities Fair and Orientation. Mini sessions and information on Student Teaching, Licensing, EdTPA, Decision Points, Dispositions, Advising, and MORE! Pittenger Student Center Ballroom - 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Snacks provided. Highly encouraged for Freshman and Transfer MUSE Majors. RSVP by scanning the QR Code on posted flyers to be eligible to win prizes! - 25 PD points for partial attendance and participation (minimum 2 mini sessions). 50 PD points for full attendance and participation (minimum 4 mini sessions)
- T: September 19, 2023 = Professional development and choral reading session focused on seasonal winter music for middle and high school choirs. This PD event, hosted by Dr. Mandy Moreno, will begin at 6:00pm in Hahn Hall, MI 163, and is being sponsored by ACDA @ Ball State. (25 points ACDA members; 20 points non-members)
- W: September 20, 2023 = Michelle Brinkman, music specialist at Nora Elementary School in Indianapolis - Professional development session entitled "Introduction to Orff Schulwerk." This PD event will begin at 6:00pm in MU 401 and is being sponsored NAFME @ Ball State. (25 points NAFME members; 20 points non-members)
- W: September 27, 2023 = Dr. Rebecca MacLeod, ASTA President and Professor of Music Education at UNC-Greensboro - Professional development session entitled "Preparing for the First Day.” This PD event will begin at 6:30pm via ZOOM and is being sponsored by ASTA @ Ball State. To attend this event, please fill out the google form: https://forms.gle/vL3NCzj94jekRs1Z7. You will be emailed with the ZOOM link. (25 points ASTA members; 20 points non-members)
- W: October 11, 2023 = Dr. Peter Opie - Professional development session entitled "Practicing Essentials.” This PD event will begin at 6:00pm in MU 401 and is being sponsored by ASTA @ Ball State. (25 points ASTA members; 20 points non-members)
- W: October 18, 2023 = Professional development and choral reading session focused on seasonal music for Fall and Halloween for middle and high school choirs. This PD event, hosted by Dr. Mandy Moreno, will begin at 6:00pm in MU 405, and is being sponsored by ACDA @ Ball State. (25 points ACDA members; 20 points non-members)
- R: October 19, 2023 = Kelly Smeltzer, retired music teacher at Jay County Jr./Sr. High School - Professional development session entitled "Secrets from a Retired Band Director: What Do You Really Want to Know?” This PD event will begin at 5:00pm in MU 401 and is being sponsored by NAFME @ Ball State. (25 points NAFME members; 20 points non-members)
- IMPORTANT: Immediately following the session with Kelly Smeltzer on October 19th, the NAFME @ Ball State Executive Board will be hosting its first informational meeting regarding the annual trip to the IMEA Professional Development Conference in Fort Wayne in January 2024. All those interested in participating in this trip should plan to attend.
- W: October 25, 2023 = Dr. Yu-Fang Chen - Professional development session entitled "How to Run a Private Studio.” This PD event will begin at 6:00pm in MU 401 and is being sponsored by ASTA @ Ball State. (25 points ASTA members; 20 points non-members)
- W: November 1, 2023 = Dr. Matt Spieker - Professional development session entitled "Solomization for Strings.” This PD event will begin at 6:00pm in MU 401 and is being sponsored by ASTA @ Ball State. (25 points ASTA members; 20 points non-members)
- F: November 3, 2023 and Sa: November 4, 2023 = Hallway monitors and event support for the IN-ASTA Orchestra Festival, held in the Music Instruction Building and Sursa Hall. You must contact Patricia Burton ([email protected]) to sign up. Students will be assigned to 90-minute blocks throughout the day. To earn PD points, students must complete a 1-2 page reflection and have their PD Log signed by Patricia Burton. Reflections could address the role and responsibilities of directors in festival settings or the potential benefits of festival participation on students' developing musicianship. (25 points ASTA members; 20 points non-members)
- Sa: November 4, 2023 and Su: November 5, 2023 = Attend the Muncie Civic Theatre's Youth Education Encore Program Production of "The Lion King, Jr." Performances held in Pruis Hall. Showtimes on both Saturday and Sunday are 2:00pm, 4:30pm, and 7:00pm. Doors open 30 minutes before showtime. (15 points for attendance and a 2-page reflection on the potential for community-based arts programs to supplement and support school-based arts programs and individual students' growth and development).
- R: November 9, 2023 = Amy Hourigan, Associate Lecturer of Music Education and licensed Music Therapist - Professional development session entitled "Music Reaches Everyone: Teaching Music to Students with Autism” This PD event will begin at 5:00pm in MU 401 and is being sponsored by NAFME @ Ball State. (25 points NAFME members; 20 points non-members)
- IMPORTANT: Immediately following the session with Ms. Hourigan on November 9th, the NAFME @ Ball State Executive Board will host another informational meeting regarding the annual trip to the IMEA Professional Development Conference in Fort Wayne in January 2024. This will be to update those who have already planned to participate on travel arrangements, schedules, room assignments, etc. All those planning to participate in the trip should plan to attend.
- Sa: November 11, 2023 = Hallway and room monitors, group escorts, and event support for the ACDA Choral Invitational, held in the Music Instruction Building and Sursa Hall. To earn PD points, students must verify their participation and complete a 1-2 page reflection. Reflections could address the role and responsibilities of directors in contest/festival settings or the potential benefits of festival participation on students' developing musicianship. (25 points ACDA members; 20 points non-members)
- W: November 29, 2023 = Professional development and choral reading session focused on Holiday Music for middle and high school choirs. This PD event, hosted by Dr. Mandy Moreno, will begin at 6:00pm in MU 405, and is being sponsored by ACDA @ Ball State. (25 points ACDA members; 20 points non-members)
- R: November 30, 2023 = Brianna Beaupre, Band Director at Cowan Schools, and Elizabeth Carter, Band Director at Daleville Schools - Professional development session entitled "Fundraising Opportunities for Small Schools and the Value of Collaboration: The Combined Marching Band Experience.” This PD event will begin at 5:00pm in MU 401 and is being sponsored by NAFME @ Ball State. (25 points NAFME members; 20 points non-members)
